The list below gives an overview on current project ideas (most of them already submitted to various project submission calls, national or European) and synergetic project approaches with neighbouring fields. These projects are managed through the "Clearing house" of ILI management. Once accepted they follow their own rules and conditions for project work and confidentiality. ILI membership does of course not grant any access rights on the results of the projects. However, members are allowed to submit their ideas and candidatures for participation in the projects.
Once the project admitted by a financing organisation (national gouvernments, European Commission etc.) ILI management is following up the project evolution in order to guarantee the coordination with other projects and with the thematic highlights of ILI (for example for issues of analytical methods).
Any legal approach to access rights on projects and/or connected informations is excluded. These conditions are accepted by any entity or person entering in communication with ILI management about projects ideas and project participation.
 
 
 
PROJECT IDEA 1: RESINS
 Lignin is a natural glue, that can be used as renewable and low price addition to various resins and adhesives.

PROJECT IDEA 2: BIOACTIVITY
 Lignin and its metabolites play a crucial role for plants', animals' and humans' metabolic functions: absorption of toxins, anti-microbial, anti-oxidant, immunity reimforcement, performance stimulation etc.

PROJECT IDEA 3: NEW ANALYTICAL METHODS
 Improvement of reliability and universality of analytical methods for lignin is a key factor for increase of it's industrial use.

PROJECT IDEA 4: USER ORIENTED NETWORK
 In EUROLIGNIN multiple recommendations for research priorities have been worked out. Their implementation would request an ambitious new Network (NOE, COST).

 Improvement of lignin quality by fractionation, chemical and enzymatical modification

PROJECT IDEA 6: ANIMAL FEED
 Replacement of preventive anti-biotics is a major challenge in animal feed

PROJECT IDEA 7: NUTRACEUTICALS
 Lignin's health effects are well documented. Its bioactive effects, like anti-oxidant, promise multiple perspectives in health oriented foods and feeds.

PROJECT IDEA 8: MOLECULAR WEIGHT
 Reliable absolute measurement of lignin molecular weight still needs further development work

PROJECT IDEA 9: TOXICITY
 No toxicity for pure lignin is known. However detailed data on long term effects and about dependence on chemical structure can be improved.

PROJECT IDEA 10: REACTIVITY
 Chemical reactivity of lignin (for example in resin systems) is still not well understood and difficult to control. Reference methods have to be developped for these aspects.

PROJECT IDEA 11: LIGNIN ANALYSIS
 Interlaboratory reproducibility of analytical methods has to be co-ordinated in an intensive way.

PROJECT IDEA 12: LIGNIN APPLICATION PLATFORM
 The multiple uses as resulting of the Eurolignin Network final report might be developped in a summing up project, that is involving the most promising applications for quantity and added value.

SYNERGY 1: PULPING AND CELLULOSE
 Pulp industry is the major source of industrial lignins. Co-ordination with that field is therefore crucial.

SYNERGY 2: BIOFUELS
 Successful lignin utilisation will be a key success factor for big scale industrial production of ethanol biofuel.

SYNERGY 3: POLYSACCHARIDES
 The exist many synergies for analytics and application between the lignin field and polysaccharides

Project Status: 1 independent project running
SYNERGY 4: BIOACTIVITY
 Many other natural substances have similar challenges and problems: hemicellulose, chitosans, other polyphenols (tannins, flavonoids etc.

SYNERGY 5: BIOREFINERY
 This concept is very fashionable. Lignin use is one of its key elements.
